ELEGANT DOWNTOWN WEDDING LIGHTING
Reception lighting by Wallflower Event Design was a gift for this spring wedding in downtown Pittsburgh. A longtime friend of the groom hired us to light the Pennsylvanian’s Grand Hall as a surprise to the couple.
Constructed in 1900, The Pennsylvanian was first used as Pittsburgh’s union station. It is an iconic building for both visitors and locals. One thing we love about our job is the opportunity to provide lighting for unique and historic spaces. It would be our first time providing wedding lighting at the Pennsylvanian. As well as our first time providing an audio package for a wedding reception.
Often, we design our event lighting to illuminate familiar venues in new ways. We chose to light the side of each column to highlight the depth and scale of the Pennsylvanian’s architecture. This lighting made the architecture much more dramatic by amplifying the contrasting colors in the various stones and marbles in the Grand Hall.
Additionally, our uplights were able to illuminate the 40’ vaulted ceilings, drawing the eye to the venue’s decorative molding and massive skylight. To us, this made the implication of the night sky outside, much more romantic & apparent in the mind. The venue felt like it was bathed in a rosy candle like glow, even though none of our lighting fixtures were apparent in the room.
The 11,000 square foot Grand Hall felt much more alive with the illumination of our lights. Throughout the ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner, our uplighting provided a cozy amber light. Afterwards, our lighting programmer provided dance floor lighting for their lively reception. We love to honor the historic nature of a space, then throw a party fit for how we celebrate today.
